When I bought my big screen TV a few years ago I also began subscribing to satellite TV, in particular DirecTV. I also bought a receiver/amplifier to run the TV and the satellite through so that I could get the upgraded sound that comes with satellite TV. I'm not much of a techie in this area, but the difference between cable viewing and sound and satellite TV and sound is incredible.
I was left with a dilemma though as I still needed basic cable TV to get my local channels (I didn't want to bother with an outside antenna). So for several years now I've had what amounts to duplicate television service. That may be coming to an end now because DirecTV has now added local channels by satellite to their service. I've done some calculating and determined that I can drop my basic cable service and add DirecTV's local channel service and save $43 per month plus I get the added advantage of a better picture since I don't have digital cable.
There is one disadvantage. I have to add a second satellite dish for the local channels. But DirecTV also replaces my two current satellite receivers and installs the new dish for free.
I do feel a little disloyal about changing from cable because I don't have a lot of complaints about my cable company other than their customer service reps apparently fell off a turnip truck. They've been very progressive service-wise, especially with cable internet service. I've had high speed internet for at least five years.
I'm still thinking it over but it's going to be hard to not go for this deal.
