One of the great mysteries of modern life for me is why seemingly intelligent people frequently make incredibly bad decisions.
The laundry list of people who fit that description covers the entire range of professions, education and lifestyle. For example, how could Elliott Spitzer (or any other governor) expect to get away with cavorting with prostitutes? This is the day and age of the media where everything gets looked at microscopically. For him to do what he did just defies reality. It's delusional.
How about Hilliary Clinton's dodging those Bosnian bullets? You would think she might remember that correctly in the middle of a Presidential primary. Wrong.
And what's with professional athletes who can't seem to make rational decisions? Frequently they cost themselves literally millions of dollars for incredibly stupid decisions. After all the publicity regarding doping the Tour de France had riders kicked off this year for...doping. Come on people. I mean how stupid is that. It has to be delusional.
Something else I've noticed is that really bad decisions aren't just made by individuals. Groups and organizations do it as well. You might think that that the more people involved in a decision the less likely it would be an incredibly stupid one. You would be wrong. I think of PETA who probably has some noble objectives but blur those with some of their silly pronouncements. Or how about Coca-Cola in the eighties wanting to ditch the original formula.
I'm sure that on a cable news show or maybe in a magazine some psychiatrist has analyzed all this and has an answer for this behavior. And I'm equally sure that person says it relates to arrogance, power and wealth, etc. Well I have an answer too. In East Tennessee we just call it being stupid.
