1. The FBI is expected to reveal their evidence later this week that they have against the anthrax researcher who committed suicide. My thought is that it had better be good. At the very least it has to be better than what they had on their previous suspect. That ended up costing us taxpayers nearly six million dollars in a lawsuit--not to speak of the millions spent on the investigation. I've watched and listened to the information that's come out so far and I don't see anything but circumstantial evidence. I hope the Feds get it right this time but right now I'm not feeling too comfortable about their abilities. His suicide doesn't mean anything to me as far as whether he was guilty or not. FBI agents could have implied and harassed him into that. I would like to know motive and I think they need some dead solid physical evidence on this guy and if they don't come up with it their reputation is going to drop even lower--if that's possible.
2.If this is true and I have no reason to believe it isn't, I would like to know how Al Gore continues to get away with his hypocrisy. I know the conservative right focuses on it (as in this piece) and because of that I'm not always sure what the real truth is. But right now there seems to be a lot of smoke around Al in this regard and where there is smoke there's fire. It's looking like the media has fallen in love with Al's movies, speeches, and Nobel Prize and might be giving him a pass. They wouldn't do that, would they?
3. And speaking of the media have you ever noticed how the media will turn good news into bad news? I'm sorry guys but to me lower oil prices are a good thing right now even if it means the recession is full-fledged. If there's a news organization out there that doesn't practice this negativity someone please tell me where I can find it.
4. In a strange twist the airline industry seems to be heading back to what it looked like prior to deregulation thirty years ago. High fares with a good many empty seats and limited service to smaller cities were the rule back then. I can distinctly remember when flying was basically considered as something only the well-to-do could afford. We seem to be heading back that way except with some new wrinkles--charging for luggage, pillows, food, etc. But my feeling is the marketplace will sort all of this out. In fact, with some rare exceptions, it always does that. It's not necessarily beneficial to all but it will reach an equilibrium. As for me, flying has become too much of a hassle. The cheap costs were great but all the other stuff was becoming too much to deal with. If I can avoid flying now I do.
5. I realize that I'm in the minority on this but I'm totally ready for summer to be over. The heat and humidity of August in East Tennessee is a killer. I avoid doing anything outside this time of year unless it's early morning or late evening. The good news is that Big Orange football is less than four weeks away. That's the official end of summer for me and I'm ready.
