After my workout last night I came home and turned on the boob tube while I made myself a gourmet salad (for me that means more than one type of lettuce).
The tube came up on Fox and Bill O' Reilly. With my hands immersed in lettuce I was unable to change the channel. I had to listen but at least I didn't have to watch. O'Reilly announced that his show now had an audience larger than NBC Nightly News. I find that stunning news.
It's hard for me to imagine that shows like O'Reilly and his opposite Olbermann get any viewers and to think either one of them get more than one of the network news programs says a lot about the state of network news. Both guys have about a dozen talking heads that appear regularly on their show and they all play either a role of supporting the host or arguing against the host. It's the same routine all the time on both shows. The script on O'Reilly is to bash liberals and the script on Olbermann is to bash conservatives. To O'Reilly's credit he takes a different stance on some rare occasions. But I think that might be just to attract some liberal viewers although I suspect that's very few. Olbermann's script doesn't vary any. Olbermann also seems obsessed with O'Reilly. Both always seem like they're angry.
I'll say this for their shows. They don't hide their agendas. What has happened to a balanced approach on so-called news broadcasts or news programs? I've seen out takes from The View in which those ladies clearly attacked McCain while lauding Obama. Whoopi Goldberg talked about slavery with McCain while Barbara Walters told Obama how good looking he was. There's certainly no balance on O'Reilly or Olberman. It's like Fox and MSNBC have lost control or they're not even trying to maintain any form of balance. And because of that I don't know how any one can really take them seriously or give either of them any credibility.
It's strange that in this day and age of electronic media I'm actually starting to miss the old fashioned newspaper. At least they labeled their opinions as such and had a page for them. It's too bad that O'Reilly and Oldermann aren't in printed form. I could use their print version in the bottom of the bird cage.
