I watched the Vice-Presidential debate last night. It's the first time this year that I've actually made the effort to educate myself on the candidates, Vice-Presidential or otherwise. It's getting close enough to the election that I know I should start paying more attention to what's being said.
I watched the entire debate and as it went on I found myself liking Sarah Palin. I didn't dislike Joe Biden. I just liked Palin better. Toward the end of the debate I tried to analyze why I was feeling that way. And I did that because I wanted to understand why I was feeling more favorable to her than Biden. I could come up with only one answer. She's simply thinks and acts more like me than Joe Biden does.
My favoritism toward her has nothing to do with positions or views. I think it's just because Biden talked like the politician he is. And my disgust with all things Washington at this point is huge. Based on news reports after the House bailout vote I don't think I'm alone in that. There is a reason the politicians in Washington have popularity ratings only slightly higher than a child molester. The partisanship, the bickering, the general dysfunction is just too much for me. Each of the other candidates--Biden, Obama, and McCain--symbolize Washington and all that negativity. Palin does not. She's change. That's why I like her, pure and simple.
Of course she's not running for President. So I have a dilemma. I have yet to see either Presidential candidate articulate a vision or a plan for decreasing our oil dependency, fixing our economy, defeating terrorism and restoring our national pride. Oh, they've got a lot of words, both verbal and written, about all of that. But that gut feeling I need to get about a candidate in that regard just isn't there. It's just words and rhetoric.
I really think this country is on the precipice of a downward spiral. And because of that we need leadership in Washington in the worst way. But I don't think either candidate has what it takes to bring the country together and reverse the tide. I hope I'm wrong about that. I really do.
