GRUMPY OLD MEN

Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man.

I really don't understand any rationale for David Letterman saying what he said regarding Sarah Palin's daughter.  And his apology the next night, if you could call it that, didn't go much toward showing sincere regret.  If anything he seemed to be discounting it although he did admit it was in poor taste.

I understand that his writers write the jokes.  But it's his show and his monologue.  He has a responsibility for what he says on his own show.

I've thought for many years now that one of the biggest problems this country has is that there are no checks and balances on the media, particularly television.  Oh sure, there are some checks but they don't amount to much.  The fact is that David Letterman can say stuff like this and not apologize or admit he was out of line at all.  And essentially that's what I think he's done in this instance.

I really don't think this is a complicated issue.  He or anyone else can say what they want about Sarah Palin or any other politician even if it's pretty nasty.  They're in the public eye.  It goes with the territory.  But family members, especially kids, are off limits.  It's just that simple.  I wonder what he would think if someone said things like that about his kid.

Letterman crossed the line.  And he made it worse with the sexual content.  And I don't think he did much to correct it the next night, perhaps even making it worse by some of his tone and comments.

I used to enjoy the early years of his show and really thought he was the heir apparent to Carson figuratively speaking.  But he's developed a certain degree of nastiness and lack of compassion over the years.  I don't like him or his show anymore.  Carson had the great ability to make fun of others but he was even better making fun of himself.  Letterman is missing that quality.

I admit that I'm pretty grumpy.  But he's really a grumpy old man.

Your Comments

Lewis - I don't believe that you are grumpy at all - I also was appalled at his comments, and total lack of apology. I refuse to watch his show, I know, no one knows but me. I don't consider his show to be entertaining at all.
