Joe Carter has died. Carter, 78, was the son of A.P. Carter of the country music Carter family, which most famously included A.P.'s wife Sara and her cousin Maybelle. Subsequent generations included June Carter Cash, wife of Johnny Cash.
The Carter family is credited with the very first country music recording session in 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee. That session is often referred to as the "big bang of country music" and launched the careers of A.P., Sara and Maybelle. Joe Carter was present at that session as a five year old boy.
He is survived by one sister, Janette, who along with Joe established The Carter Family Fold, a country and bluegrass music center in Hiltons, Virginia. A.P.'s dying wish was for his children to maintain his music after he was gone. The Carter Family Fold, established in the early 1970s, was the fulfillment of that wish.
Marty Stuart, Tom T. Hall, and John Carter Cash, son of Johnny Cash are listed as honorary pallbearers for Joe Carter's funeral at Mount Vernon Church, Maces Springs, Virginia.
